Cape May is One of the Prettiest Towns in America

Monday, July 26th, 2010

We’ve known it all along here at our Cape May bed and breakfast, but frankly, we didn’t want to say it and appear boastful. Now, someone else has said it for us; Cape May gives out a hearty shout of thanks to Forbes Traveler for listing us as one of the prettiest towns in America.

The Delaware Bay Lighthouse Cruise

Thursday, June 17th, 2010

No seacoast town is complete without a lighthouse. The lighthouse stands as proof that people travel past the shore – that the town is on the map. The Cape May Lighthouse is a glorious example of a fine, mid-19th century lighthouse. We hope you will climb to the top of the Cape May Lighthouse when next you stay at our Cape May bed and breakfast: it’s good exercise, and the view is terrific.Cape May Lighthouse (more…)

Enjoy Empty Beaches While You Can

Wednesday, January 27th, 2010

It’s still winter outside our Cape May NJ b&b, so the crowds are still thin. That’s why this is our favorite time to walk the beaches, take in magnificent sunsets, and imagine the world is ours.

The events calendar at our Cape May inn is already filling with activities at the inn and around town. The coming months are sure to be full of fun. While there is always time and space for quiet reflection no matter what is taking place here, now is a good time to pull on your sweater and enjoy having the windswept beaches to yourself.

Cape May Mansions by the Sea Trolley Tour

The Abbey

Lovely Historic Cape May

Mondays through Saturdays at 10:45 am, guests of our Cape May NJ bed and breakfast may ride through history on the Mansions by the Sea Trolley Tour. Sit comfortably in a historic trolley and gaze at some of the most magnificent buildings built in Cape May. You’ll see small beach and large cottages from the 1870s, enormous hotels from the same era, and contemporary architecture as well. While you look, you will listen to a fascinating story by the guide.

It’s fun to consider the development of Cape May this way. Our town was destroyed by a fire in 1878, and out of the ashes rose the beautiful town that we see around us today. There are a good number of colorful mansions decked out with gingerbread trim – affectionately known as “painted ladies”. They were summer homes for the well-to-do back in the day, when Cape May was playground to residents of Philadelphia and New York. Once these homes became unaffordable for the families who owned them (not many people need 8+ bedrooms these days), they faced demolition by bulldozer. Fortunately, they were saved in 1976 when the entire town was listed as a National Historic Landmark. Now many of those grand old painted ladies are Cape May bed and breakfasts, like our own. We love our old girl, and hope she’ll be around to be enjoyed by many generations to come.

Cape May, The Best Beach

Walk on Cape May NJ Beaches

The folks at The Travel Channel get around, and they have placed Cape May NJ on the list of best beaches from around the world. This is no small honor, as anyone who has ever traveled to other beaches on the list – such as Mykonos Island, Greece or Pink Sands, Bahamas – must surely realize.

Yes, we take our beaches seriously here, raking them each morning. It is a true pleasure to walk or stretch out on these sands. Historically, Cape May NJ has been the stomping ground of the rich, the famous, and the powerful. Indeed, many a president has walked along these beaches. According to Finn-Olaf Jones of the Travel Channel, “Cape May is the aristocrat of beaches.” Come and let yourself be king or queen for a while.

Our Cape May Bed and Breakfast is close to the beach. Have a sunrise stroll on the beach and return to delicious, home-made breakfast. As you digest, sit on our porch and watch the passerby. Our Cape May Inn is in the heart of the historic town, making it ideal for people watching and exploring the town on foot. We look forward to seeing you.

Mother’s Day at our Cape May Bed and Breakfast

motherly love

No one loves you like your mother.

This weekend is Mother’s Day, and we know that you have a mother to celebrate. When was the last time that you took your mother away for the weekend? When was the last time that you took the mother of your children away for the weekend? No matter, you can do it this weekend at our Cape May Bed and Breakfast. You may sit on our porch and swap stories, or play a game and enjoy one another’s company. We will help make the mother in your life feel special and loved.

May is a great time to visit Cape May, and the John F Craig House is a great place to stay while here. BedandBreakfast.com named us one of the 10 best inns in the Mid-Atlantic states – the only winner in Cape May. We love what we do, we enjoy our guests, and we strive to make everyone comfortable while here. So come enjoy the beaches and our historic town; Mom will be so pleased.

Treat Mom to tea at the Carriage House Tearoom & Café. Located on the grounds of the 1879 Emma Physick Estate, the Carriage House serves a traditional tea service in the original (renovated) carriage house of the estate. If the weather is fine, you may dine outside on the brick patio. It’s a great way to thank your favorite mother for all that she does.
