Happy Birthday Cape May

Thursday, June 11th, 2009

Cape May Light House 2009 is Cape May’s 400th anniversary. For a town this age, she’s doing all right, so why not spend a few days at our Cape May NJ bed and breakfast this summer and celebrate her birthday with us?

There are many special activities and events commemorating the 400th anniversary of Cape May throughout the year. For example, Cape May Whale Watcher is offering special evening cruises between 9 and 10 pm: the Half Moon Cruise (next ones are June 15 and June 29) and the Full Moon Cruise (next one is July 7). Many people rarely have the opportunity to be out on the water after sunset, so these are a real treat.

History buffs will be pleased to note that there will be quite a few interesting lectures and presentations on the history of Cape May throughout the summer. One such event is “Chronicles of Cape May as related by Jackson D’Catur … AKA the Old Fogey.” The Old Fogey in question is a well known columnist who tells the tale of his own fantastical influence on the Civil War, the outbreak of World War I, and many events in between. This is a special, one night only performance on June 29 from 8 – 9 pm at The Robert Shackleton Playhouse.

“An Overview of Cape May’s History” will be offered in a power point presentation by Bob Heinly on Monday, July 6, from 7 – 8pm. Or, you may learn more specifically about Cape May’s Maritime Heritage on July 20, at the same time. This power point presentation will discuss the importance of whaling and fishing to the Cape May community, along with trade and travel. There are lectures on how Cape May became a popular seaside resort, and opportunities to listen to Victorian music or, more specifically, maritime music.

These are but a few of the special offerings around town this summer. Guests at our Cape May bed and breakfast will have a whale of a good time here.
