Higbee Beach

Saturday, July 30th, 2011

Higbee Beach is a secluded spot in West Cape May. We love the beaches that are just 2 blocks from our inn, but from time to time, Higbee Beach makes for a nice change. It’s very different from the other beaches of Cape May, and it’s worth the little effort it takes to reach it. Check it out when next you stay at our Cape May Bed and Breakfast.

Relax on the porch of our Cape May Bed and Breakfast after a day at Higbee Beach.

Since it sits on Delaware Bay rather than the Atlantic Ocean, Higbee Beach does not have large waves. The water laps rather than crashes to shore, although the Cape May – Lewes Ferry does create a few good waves as it passes this thin strip of sand. Higbee is a perfect beach for walking and it’s ideal for swimming, especially if you prefer calm waters.

If you like to stretch out on blankets and warm yourself in the sun, it’s best to get to Higbee Beach early in the day. Higbee is a haven for folks who don’t like to listen to other people’s music while at the beach, and who might care to enjoy a sip of wine or beer as evening approaches. Alcohol is allowed at Higbee, as are leashed dogs.

You’ll have to walk a bit to get to Higbee Beach, through woods and over dunes, but it’s worth it. Ask us how to find it once you arrive at our Cape May Bed and Breakfast.

The Perfect Day for a Cape May B&B Innkeeper

Read on to learn the perfect day for a Cape May Bed and Breakfast innkeeper – Barbara. This was first published in the May/June 2010 edition of Cape May’s Exit Zero Magazine.

My perfect day starts with the beautiful blue Cape May sky. From my bed, I can see it through the transom above the door that leads to our garden. The bright colors of an early dawn set the tone for my day.

Barbara, with a perfect cup of coffee after a perfect morning stroll.

After a while, I stumble out to fix the first pot of coffee. I have the system down to an art. I can just plant my feet in front of the coffee maker and Voila! – four minutes later – Juan Valdez is wafting through the house.

While the coffee is brewing I set off for a walk around town. I love to take in the rhythms of early mornings in Cape May, whether it is folks just sitting on benches gazing at the ocean, people on their early morning power walk, the more energetic line skaters, or my neighbor, Jay Schatz opening his inn and feeding his cats. Often I walk to the ever-changing Cove and then pause for a moment at every opening at the Pavilion – each offers a different and beautiful view of Cape May. (more…)
