Go to the theater while at our Cape May NJ B&B

We feel so fortunate to have great theater in our small town of Cape May. We recently saw the Cape May Stage production of Souvenir at the Robert Shackleton Playhouse. The Playhouse is in the Historic District of Cape May, in a restored church that has been adapted with a state-of-the-art auditorium. It is a pleasant experience to simply be in the theater.

The story of Souvenir follows an eccentric real life New York socialite who believed herself to be the the greatest opera diva of her age. She performed a sold-out concert at Carnegie hall, in spite of the fact that she could not sing on key at all. It is a hilarious, yet touching, musical, and we heartily recommend it. We hope that visitors to our Cape May NJ Bed and Breakfast will spend a night at the theater. Look into the dinner and a show special, where the theater joins forces with several local restaurants to offer a great deal, great dining, and great entertainment.

After the Souvenir run, George Burns graces the stage with Say Goodnight Gracie. Could there be a better way to spend an evening than listening to beloved Mr Burns reminisce about his life?

Cape May Inn: New Jersey Theater

Wednesday, March 18th, 2009

The Cape May 2009 spring theater season promises to be as rich and diverse as ever, thanks to the direction and vision of Cape May’s two Equity Theaters.

The Cape May Stage and The East Lynne Theater Company offer a calendar of theater events with a little something for everyone — comedy, drama and music — large ensembles and one-woman shows. These theaters are both within walking distance of our New Jersey Bed and Breakfast.

The Cape May Stage

The Cape May Stage will be performing the award-winning Souvenir, a musical comedy about, “a society lady named Florence Foster Jenkins, who became a singing phenomenon in the 30s and 40s. But not for singing well! She became famous for singing so badly that she became a huge success.cape-may-stage

She performed in a packed Carnegie Hall but naively mistook the laughs for cheers. Later, she learns the devastating truth — she was not the great coloratura soprano she thought herself to be.” Souvenir will be running from May 20 to June 20, a beautiful time of year here around the Cape May Bed and Breakfast Inn.

Starting June 24, The Cape May Stage will run Good Night Gracie, written by the Tony Award winning Rupert Holmes. Good Night Gracie is the emotional and inspirational love story that pays homage to George Burns’ wife, Gracie Allen. It was nominated for a Tony Award for ‘Best Play’ and won the National Broadway Theater Award for ‘Best Play’ in 2003.

Originally performed on Broadway by Frank Gorshin, the play serves as a reminder  of the brilliance of comedians of that era. Burns and Allen were among the very best.

Cape May Stage performances take place at the Robert Shackleton Playhouse at Bank and Lafayette Streets in Cape May, just steps away from our Cape May lodging.

The Cape May Theater is not the only place to see live stage performances while on your vacation. We will continue to share news, events & attractions with you on this, our Cape May Bed and Breakfast NJ blog. See you soon!
